In our winery, we focus all our attention on the outstanding qualities of Sopron. We produce our elegant, stylish, terroir-faithful wines with the innovative, modern approach characteristic of the Kúria.
The establishment and development of Kúria Sopron Winery happened gradually. Since 2006, our vineyards have slowly expanded, now covering a total of 18 hectares across 4 plots. Our focus is on Kékfrankos, complemented by Merlot and a few newly planted white varieties. From 2014, we replanted part of the vineyards according to our own needs in the Harmler, Frettner, Steinier, and Weidengrund plots. Expressing our own needs means that we created modern vineyards both in terms of spacing and the varieties and clones used.
The initial focus was on Merlot and Kékfrankos, not only because these two varieties are undoubtedly the most talented on the Fertő shore, but also because they withstood the 200-kilometer journey to Etyek best, as the processing of Sopron grapes took place at the company group's Etyek winery until the 2024 harvest. In August 2024, we took a significant step to become a fully-fledged Sopron winery and an active participant and shaper of the wine region, as this year we began processing the grapes harvested here locally, and with this step, Kúria Sopron Winery was born.

Creating in one of the oldest wine regions is both an honor and a responsibility. It is an honor because our winery is considered new in the region, yet we are warmly welcomed by the locals known for their strong local patriotism. It is a responsibility because we introduce our innovative ideas in winemaking—driven by internal motivation—while respecting local traditions. We see many opportunities in our Sopron vineyards. We have well-suited plots from which our head winemaker, Sándor Mérész, and his team bring out the best every year.
In the Sopron wine region, the cool air from the Alps results in low humidity, and the Fertő Lake’s warming effect in winter and cooling effect in summer create unique and exciting climatic conditions. The soil conditions are exceptional, with the mica schist bedrock imparting a distinctive minerality to the wine. Our Sopron vineyard complex appears homogeneous at first glance, but even within individual plots, there is significant variation in water retention; where a substantial clay lens is present, everything changes completely. The tough soil conditions and the associated slower maturation add further complexity, constantly challenging our team.
